Is the island of Aruba right for you?

Aruba is a 32-kilometre (20 miles) long island of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea, 27 km (17 miles) north of the Paraguaná Peninsula, Falcón State, Venezuela. It is in the Realm of Kingdom of the Netherlands, which consists of a European part (The Netherlands) and a Caribbean-American part (Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles). Unlike much of the Caribbean-American region, Aruba has a dry climate and an arid, cactus-strewn landscape. This climate has helped tourism as visitors to the island can reliably expect warm sunny weather. It has a land area of 193 km² (75 sq miles) and lies outside the hurricane belt.


Population
Aruba has a population of approximately 105,000.


Political Structure
As a Constituent Country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Aruba's politics take place within a framework of a 21-member Parliament and an eight-member Cabinet. The governor of Aruba is appointed for a six-year term by the monarch, and the prime minister and deputy prime minister are elected by the Staten for four-year terms. The Staten is made up of 21 members elected by direct, popular vote to serve a four-year term.


Infrastructure and Economy
Aruba enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the Caribbean region and the lowest crime rate; low poverty and unemployment rates are also positives for Aruba. About half of the Aruban gross national product is earned through tourism or related activities.
The G.D.P. per capita for Aruba is calculated to be around $23,600, one of the highest in the Americas.


Language
The official language of Aruba is Dutch and Papiamento1.


Currency
The country's official currency is the Aruban florin.


Exchange Control
There are no foreign exchange controls as such in Aruba, however foreign exchange transactions are reported to the Central Bank, and there a number of regulations concerning transfers of foreign exchange, plus a tax of 1.3% on many transfers.


Law
Based on Dutch civil law system, with some English common law influence.
